Ao no Exorcist 18 – Long Time, No Chat

I had a hard time on choosing what picture to choose in the front page because picking this is kind of scary. Bon's just sooooo scary...

Chapter 18 – “Discord”

It’s honestly been a long time since I’ve read this manga full of circles for the dialogue. It has always been some action and full of pages of reaction. It gives me a good feeling for some reason.

So, the story picks up itself when they are in preparation for defending against some sort of enemy that attempts to steal the Right Eye. Their objective is unclear, but everyone knows well that it has something to do with the Eyes. What the chapter is all about is the internal conflict they’re having, thus the title “Discord” and that includes Rin being the son of Satan.

They were divided into three: Bon’s group to greet their relatives, and the girls & Rin to help the Doctors treat the patients.

Apparently, on Rin’s side, it seems like Rin can’t do anything at all and stay put as they still fear him being the son of Satan. On the other hand, there’s Shiemi still wondering about what use she would be when the real battle starts. She still “believes” that she can’t do anything for them and might as well do something useful now, but ends up falling a lot of things. When Shiemi was told to pick up some plants, Izumo follows. This conversation is surprisingly good. They talk about Shiemi and ends up getting cheesy. If this were in the anime, it would be quite clear how cheesy things would get, but for a manga, it isn’t really that obvious. Still, I appreciate the manga for having Izumo as a character that actually says something about those cheesy things at these days (*cough* Naruto *cough*).

Sadly, however, when Shiemi patches things up (again and again), there’s another conflict in some room. As sickly people, it seems like they’re still active at things like this. They start fighting each other, but Bon stops this conflict. Unfortunately, the results aren’t doing well either as they even start “attacking” Bon through words.

At the current rate things are going, the plan is going to fall into pieces already. It’s a common thing, both in real life and for a plot in anime & manga, and how acceptable this is as part of the story is great. It makes everyone want to correct their mistakes at how flawed they look like.

Rating: ★★☆
It stays great throughout. I do find it unusual for it being full of conversations.
