Ao no Exorcist 17 – The Flames Are Blue and Pretty

Just think about it, you don't get to see blue flames everyday, so all Exorcists should have fun seeing them as bright and special flames.

Chapter 17 – “Towards Kyoto, Go!”

Hmm… I can really tell that this is a shounen manga. Also, Rin has definitely changed. He’s really controlling his blue flames, but his familiar, Cat Sith, interests me more. I mean, it’s cute, and it’s on your head. Who wouldn’t want that? Who cares about the action, you still get the ecchi dose. Back to the story…

So, apparently, Rin’s going to the Kyoto Expedition, together with the other ExWires. The whole chapter was consumed on how they accept Rin as the son of Satan, which is quite interesting because it’s one of the things you’d always want to see next.

Surprisingly, the three of Bon’s group were all acting like he’s some stranger and trying hard not to make eye contact, all to make sure he won’t be on a rampage. Yes, I’m surprised at that reaction because it’s as stupid as you get. Sure, he’s the son of Satan, but at least he’s proved himself well as a friend and as an Exorcist. I guess it’s no surprise either that all their relatives died by the Blue Flames Rin has.

What’s more surprising though, is that Izumo actually doesn’t really care about sitting near him. I mean, it shouldn’t be no surprise that Izumo is, but what really striked me was the explanation she gave him, that most Exorcists are related by demon blood and what separates him from those Exorcists is that he’s the son of Satan.

Right after the announcement of Shura and an explanation of a few other people, however, they made a ruckus while Shura was sleeping. In the end, everyone get’s punished for collective responsibility. Worse comes to worse, the rock possessed by a demon that gets harder and harder after some time went on a “rampage” on itself and held Shiemi on the ground. Bon’s group tried to help him but couldn’t do any good. Rin, then, takes his turn but uses up his flames. Losing concentration because of Bon’s fear of the Blue Flames, the seats were on fire. It was easily solved by the summon of Izumo, however, things get worse when Rin and Bon take on a conversation fight. I kind of got excited on this part but it all got ruined (at least I think it was ruined) by Shura (appearing out of nowhere), destroying the demon rock that almost fell on the head of Bon.

Things get settled – a bit – and the place where they’re staying is somehow related to Bon. They all give Bon a warm welcome, ExWires surprised, and Bon feels stupid about it.

Rating: ★★☆
I’ve been waiting for this moment where they all meet again and talk about Rin. However, as expected, it wouldn’t be as striking. It’s still great that they took this issue head-on before they go with the huge story the manga’s going to take on. “Good” and that’s all I can say for it.
